Great turnout! A couple hundred of concerned residents from Bay Area showed up at our “#NoSB82 Rally” 4/30 at Oakland.

The physical wound was not as severe as the wound in my heart,” said Fremont Vice Mayor Yang Shao.
Vice Mayor Shao was one of the speakers at the rally. He rolled up his pant sleeve to show KPIX 5 the scars on his right knee from a violent robbery back on June 6, 2019. He said three people robbed him of his cellphone as the BART train he was riding stopped at the Oakland Fruitvale Station. When he chased after them, they pushed him down the escalator.

Despite the trending #StopAsianHate hashtag and the national headlines, Asian elders in the Bay Area are still being targeted.

“I’m buying mango and all of a sudden somebody grabbed my body and dropped me here,” Antonette Solis, 68, said Friday after she was mugged while shopping in Oakland’s Chinatown. “I didn’t see it. He grabbed me in the back. Grabbed me, trying to get my purse, and he took it.”

OAKLAND (KGO) — An outspoken advocate for Asian Americans in Oakland was viciously attacked while on his way to help an assault victim. All the while the community rallies against a proposed bill to reclassify certain assaults as misdemeanors.

Carl Chan, President of Oakland’s Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, recalls the moment he was attacked while walking in the area of 8th and Broadway Thursday afternoon.

“I stood up right away facing the guy,” said Chan.

More than 100 people gathered in front of California State Sen. Nancy Skinner’s office Friday to rally against SB 82, which would change how some thefts are classified.

Under SB 82, thefts under $950 that may involve force or fear without serious injury or the use of a weapon would be classified as “petty theft in the first degree,” which is punishable up to one year in jail and/or a $1000 fine. The use of minimal force or fear during a petty theft can be convicted as a felony robbery and sentenced up to five years in prison under California’s current robbery statute.

Opponents of the bill are concerned that it will cause more robberies and attacks.

該活動由「商業及住房網絡」(Business and Housing Network)、華美權益促進協會(Chinese American Institute for Empowerment)、奧克蘭中國城商會(Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce)、平等公義協會,及「硅谷華人協會」(Silicon Valley Chinese Association),這5個團體共同發起。
